Takata FAQs
Exposure to high heat and humidity over time can cause the driver and/or passenger air bag(s) to explode spraying metal shrapnel in the event of a crash. This can cause serious injury or death to the driver and/or passengers.
Mazda is aware of several individuals who have been injured as a result of this condition in Mazda vehicles.
No. The criteria for air bag deployment have not changed. As explained in the Owner's Manual, the air bags are designed to deploy in only certain types of collisions.
No, the air bag indicator light does not alert you to this condition. If your air bag indicator light comes on, please bring your vehicle to an authorized Mazda Dealer for diagnosis.
After checking your VIN, if your vehicle is affected, we do not want you to drive your vehicle. In August 2024 MNAO issued a "DO NOT DRIVE" advisory to customers who have not repaired their vehicle(s) with an open Takata recall. Owners are advised to stop driving their vehicle(s) and contact their nearest Mazda Dealer immediately to schedule a free tow and repair.
Replacement inflators have a 10-year warranty unless a new recall is issued.
There is no charge for any Mazda recall repair, including Takata affected recalls. An authorized Mazda Dealers will replace the affected air bag inflator(s) and remedy the issue free of charge. Please schedule an appointment with your nearest Mazda Dealer to arrange a free tow and to ensure they have the parts in stock necessary for this repair.
If you do not live close to a Mazda dealer, please contact the Mazda Customer Experience Center at 1-800-222-5500, Option 6 to speak with a live representative or click here to chat or email a representative.
Autoliv and TRW parts use guanidine nitrate as the air bag inflator propellant material, whereas Takata inflators use phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN). The change to Autoliv and TRW inflator parts is a decision by Mazda to no longer use inflator parts based on phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate.
Mazda made the change to alternate suppliers Autoliv and TRW because Mazda decided it would be best to stop using air bag inflators made from phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN).
Recall 4821C on 2007-2009 Mazda B-Series trucks is the only recall on desiccated inflators. All other Takata produced desiccated inflators are currently undergoing testing by various qualified engineering companies to determine whether they pose a risk to safety. Results will be evaluated by NHTSA and a determination made regarding their safety. If testing results show there is a safety concern, appropriate actions will be taken in response.
We understand your time is valuable. Scheduling an appointment ahead of time with an authorized Mazda Dealer will allow them to schedule a complimentary tow, reserve the necessary replacement part(s) for your vehicle, and help minimize your wait time and inconvenience. A new air bag inflator will take approximately one hour to install but please speak to your dealer to understand how long your vehicle will be in the shop for repairs.
All inflator parts are available for the listed vehicles. Please contact the Mazda Customer Experience Center if any authorized Mazda dealership tells you otherwise.
Your authorized Mazda Dealer will install a new driver and/or passenger air bag inflator depending on the Takata recall(s) open on your vehicle.
Your vehicle likely had an interim (temporary or like-for-like) air bag inflator repair performed and has not had the permanent repair. Until the permanent repair is completed, you are still at serious risk of the air bag inflator exploding and spraying metal shrapnel in the event of a crash. This can cause serious injury or death to the driver and/or passengers. You will continue to receive notices from Mazda requesting you contact your local dealer to schedule a complimentary tow and permanent repair. Please contact your authorized Mazda dealer with any further questions.
No. The criteria for air bag deployment have not changed. As explained in the Owner's Manual, the air bags are designed to deploy in only certain types of collisions.
This recall applies only to certain driver and/or passenger frontal air bags on the affected vehicles.
Since this concern is only present in the event of an air bag deployment, reimbursement for air bag replacement repairs will not be offered.
Any U.S. Mazda dealer can repair a recall issued by Mazda Canada Inc. or Mazda Motors de Mexico if the vehicle is in the United States or any U.S. Territory.
